National Board Forces MMC to Agree to Settlement Stating it Won’t Coerce or Threaten Nurses for Raising Concerns About Their Working Conditions

In July our union filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board (the NLRB), a federal government agency that enforces the rights of workers to unionize.

We asserted that, among other things, the Medical Center had violated federal law by threatening to discipline a nurse who had made legally protected complaints about excessive hours of work.

After investigating the charge at length the NLRB concluded that the charge had merit and as a result the Medical Center agreed to a settlement. The settlement requires that the Medical Center post a notice for 60 days that states as follows:

Solidarity prevails in on-call, Q3 weekends, and weekend PTO coverage issues

Maternity nurses recently stood together in solidarity and negotiated with management regarding a departmental on-call issue. Because of our high membership numbers and departmental engagement in our union, we were able to bargain with management to reach an agreement, which resolved the on-call issue.​

Hospital Honors Us on National Nurses Week by Sending a Notice to Increase Our Weekend Shift Requirements

​As those of you who attended a contract ratification meeting know, our bargaining team spent many months during negotiations pushing back on management’s scheduling demands. During this time, our team was often chastised by management for not “trusting” that they would always do the right thing for nurses regardless of a contract.
